The lab

We work at the CMBI. Our institute is so beautiful, and it is so nice to work here that I can only express things in pictures.

The social centre of the lab. The 20 square meter koffie table. In the back you see the wonderful machine that very quickly produces very good coffee, totally for free. You see two fridges, dishwasher, microwave, teaboiler, toaster, and hot plate.

The CMBI houses NBIC. Here Ruben, its director is getting a cup of coffee.

Our floor is connected to the NCMLS by the sticky end of a enormous double helical staircase. Here Martijn (the prof of one of the other CMBI groups) is just going up these stairs.

This is the corner that is behind, under, besides the infamous (and expensive) but beautiful (and very functional) double staircase.

I guess I better don't ask what people do underneath this double staircase...

The room in the far corner behind the staircase is a party room. The two chinese and one swiss girl occasionally take specialties from home. Especially the chinese specialties (for example, rabbit milk candies, seaweed tea, etc) occasionally can be the topic of discussion.

But we also do serious things, like reading articles, working, etc.

When we work, we work with computers. We have so many of them that they are even standing in the hallway. Notice the palm-tree and the fat-boy beanbag in the back.

Many people watch the fish one or two minutes every day. They are so stupid that no matter what problem you are working on, you immediately feel smart again. And watching them perfectly happy doing more or less nothing the whole day gives us a sense of destiny in life.

The CMBI is a clean place. We have many parties, but nevertheless it is clean and that contributes to it being such a pleasant place to work. And the nicest thing, they clean it for us. Every morning...
